  • Learning objectives and skills to be developed

The Civil Engineering degree course has been organised in accordance with the Bologna Process since the 2006/2007 academic year. The study plans, with 180 ECTS credits, have a duration of 6 semesters during the day and 8 semesters during the evening.
The areas of expertise of the civil engineers to be trained by ESTBarreiro/IPS are generally as follows: Management and Direction of Works; Supervision of Works; Budgeting; Technical Advice to Small and Medium-sized Construction Companies; Monitoring and Analysing Works and Projects at Local Authority Level.
With a strong commitment to constantly updating the curricula of the courses it offers, ESTBarreiro/IPS has restructured its Civil Engineering degree, which has been approved by the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES) for a maximum period of 6 years. The course, with its new syllabus, began operating in the 2019/2020 academic year. The new syllabus, in addition to making the programme content of the different curricular units more balanced, reinforces skills in the area of new technologies, namely CAD, GIS and BIM.

  • Career opportunities

The main career opportunities for Civil Engineering graduates from ESTBarreiro/IPS include design, maintenance, coordination, quality control, planning, supervision and construction management, both in construction companies and in infrastructure and services companies, as well as in consultancy and in central, regional and municipal administration.
The inclusion of the course in the list of higher education courses qualifying for the profession of Technical Engineer and Level 1 Engineer ensures that graduates are prepared to fulfil functions defined in the engineering acts, in accordance with the criteria established by the Order of Technical Engineers (OET) and the Order of Engineers of Portugal (OEP), respectively.
    1. level 1 engineer - Order of Engineers of Portugal (OEP)
On completion of the course, the graduate will be prepared to be awarded the title of Level 1 Engineer, awarded by the OEP. This qualification distinguishes professionals whose academic training includes an in-depth theoretical and practical approach, orientated towards research, planning and management of complex projects. The engineering acts defined by the OEP determine the activities to be carried out and the professional outlets for graduates, integrating the course into the list of higher education courses qualifying for the profession of Level 1 Engineer. Progression to full status can take place after 10 years of effective professional practice.

    2. Technical Engineer - Order of Technical Engineers (OET)
Graduates will also be eligible for the title of Technical Engineer, awarded by the OET. This qualification, based on an index of courses taught in Portugal, defines the curricular content and practical skills required to perform technical and operational duties in the construction sector, such as supervising and carrying out work. Therefore, candidates who complete the course are automatically considered Technical Engineers.
