Degree objectives
The Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering (MEB) is a partnership between the Setúbal School of Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (ESTSetúbal/IPS) and the School of Health of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (ESS/IPS). and is organised in such a way as to provide holders of a bachelor's degree or equivalent with the opportunity to acquire and deepen their skills, enabling them to design innovative solutions for improving the health and well-being of populations, in line with the objectives of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Biomedical Engineering is a rapidly developing field and is fundamental to the development and improvement of equipment and techniques essential to medical progress. As such, future masters must be able to perform new functions in a constantly evolving market. The main activities to be carried out by new masters in Biomedical Engineering require skills in the areas of research team leadership and the development of medical devices, health equipment, health software associated with hospital quality management, certification, technical support services and consulting. Advanced research and investigation of new biomaterials, nanomaterials, nanostructures and nanosystems, and the development of innovative medical devices are also part of the range of activities to be performed by new masters.

Learning objectives and skills to be developed
The MEB prioritises the training of professionals in the field of Biomedical Engineering, with a technical-scientific profile, based on solid and multidisciplinary training in science and technology, associated with biological and medical components, as recommended by the WHO. This profile integrates the knowledge acquired in a harmonious way, allowing future masters to participate in multidisciplinary projects, preparing them to solve new challenges that arise in the medical field. The MEB aims to help students develop skills to create advanced technological solutions that respond to the health needs of individuals and populations, namely: Formulating and implementing, selecting, testing and controlling the quality of: Health equipment projects for monitoring physiological functions, assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; Implants, artificial organs and active and intelligent prostheses, as well as remote-controlled medical devices for patient care and treatment; Biomaterials and biotissue manufacturing processes, as well as other tissue regeneration techniques; Biosensors; Electronic systems for the acquisition, processing and digital transmission of signals; Nanomaterials, nanostructures and nanosystems; Innovative IT approaches for the compilation and management of medical information; Manufacture of medical instrumentation; Manufacture of medical devices; Health software.
